14 I will not punish your daughters, when they commit whoredom, nor your brides, when they commit adultery, for men themselves go apart with whores, and they sacrifice with shrine harlots. Therefore the people without understanding will fall!Hosea 4

Hosea 1

1 The word of the LORD that came to Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.

2 When the LORD began to speak through Hosea, the LORD said to him, "Go, take to yourself a wife of harlotry and have children of harlotry, for the land has committed great whoredom by departing from the LORD."

3 So he went and took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim, who conceived and bore him a son.

4 And the LORD said to him, "Call his name Jezreel, for in a little while I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel.

5 And it shall come to pass at that day, that I will break the bow of Israel in the valley of Jezreel."

6 And she conceived again and bore a daughter. And God said to him, "Call her name Loruhamah [no mercy], for I will no longer have mercy upon the house of Israel that I should forgive them at all.

7 But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah and will save them; I will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, nor by horses, nor by horsemen, but by the LORD their God."

8 Now when she had weaned Loruhamah, she conceived and bore a son.

9 Then God said, "Call his name Loammi [Not-my-people], for you are not my people and I am not your God.

10 Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said to them, 'You are not my people,' it shall be said to them, 'You are the sons of the living God.'

11 Then the children of Judah and the children of Israel shall be gathered together and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of the land, for great will be the day of Jezreel.

Hosea 2

1 "Say you to your brothers, 'Ammi [My people],' and to your sisters, 'Ruhamah [she has obtained mercy].'

2 Plead with your mother [Israel]; plead, for she is not my wife and I am not her husband; let her put away her whoredoms out of her sight and her adulteries from between her breasts,

3 Lest I strip her naked and make her as bare as in the day that she was born, and make her like a wilderness and make her like a dry land and slay her with thirst.

4 And I will not have mercy upon her children, for they are the children of harlotry; she who conceived them has done shamefully, for she said, 'I will go after my lovers, who give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.'

6 Therefore, behold, I will hedge up your way with thorns; and wall her in so that she cannot find her paths.

7 And she will follow after her lovers but she will not overtake them; and she will seek them, but will not find them. Then she will say, 'I will go and return to my first husband, for then it was better with me than it is now.'

8 For she did not know that it was I who gave her corn and wine and oil, who lavished on her silver and gold, which they used for Baal.

9 "Therefore I will return and take away my corn in its harvest time and my wine in its season, and I will take back my wool and my flax given to cover her nakedness.

10 So now I will uncover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers, and no one shall deliver her out of my hand.

11 I will also cause her to cease all her merrriment, her feast days, her new moons, her sabbaths — all her appointed feasts.

12 And I will destroy her vines and her fig trees, of which she has said, 'These are my rewards [wages] that my lovers have given me;' and I will make them a thicket, and the wild beasts shall eat them.

13 And I will punish her for the days of the Baals, when she burned incense to them and decked herself with her earrings and her jewels and went after her lovers and forgot me," says the LORD.

14 "Therefore, behold, I will allure her and bring her into the wilderness, and I will speak tenderly to her.

15 And there I will give her her vineyards and make the valley of Achor a door of hope. And she shall sing there as in the days of her youth and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.

16 And it shall be in that day, says the LORD, "that you will call me 'Ishi [my husband],' and will no longer call me 'Baali [my master].'

17 For I will take away the names of the Baals out of her mouth, and they will no longer be remembered by their name.

18 And in that day I will make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field and the birds of heaven and with the creeping things of the ground. And I will break the bow and the sword and battle out of the earth, and I will make them lie down safely.

19 And I will betroth you to me forever; yes, I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, and in loving kindness, and in mercy.

20 I will betroth you to me in faithfulness, and you shall know the LORD.

21 "And in that day I will respond," says the LORD, "I will respond to the heavens, and they shall respond to the earth,

22 And the earth shall respond to the grain and the wine and the oil, and they shall respond to Jezreel [God plants].

23  I will plant her for me in the earth, and I will have mercy on her who had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them who were not my people, 'You are my people;' and they shall say, 'You are my God.'"

Hosea 3

1 Then the LORD said to me, "Go again, love the woman who is beloved of her husband and is an adulteress, like the love of the LORD toward the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love the sacred raisin cakes [of pagan idol worship]."

2 So I bought her [from slavery] for fifteen pieces of silver and fifteen bushels of barley.

3 And I said to her, "You shall wait for me many days; you shall not play the harlot and you shall not belong to another man. So I will also be toward you."

4 For the children of Israel shall wait many days without a king or a prince, and without a sacrifice and without a sacred pillar [idol], and without an ephod [garment covering the chest and back] or teraphim [household idol].

5 Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek the LORD their God and David [Jesus, the permanent king on the throne of David] their king; and shall come trembling to the LORD and his goodness in the latter days.

Hosea 4

1 Hear the word of the LORD, you children of Israel, for the LORD has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land: "There is no truth, mercy, love, or knowledge of God in the land.

2 There is only swearing, lying, killing, stealing, and committing adultery; they break all restraint, and bloodshed follows bloodshed.

3 Therefore the land will mourn, and everyone who dwells in it will languish [pine away], along with the beasts of the field and the birds of heaven; yes, the fishes of the sea will also die.

4 Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another, for my contention is with the priest.

5 Therefore you [priests] shall fall in the daytime, and the [false] prophet also shall fall with you in the night; and I will destroy your mother [Israel].

6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you so that you shall not be a priest to me. Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your children.

7 The more they [the priests] increased, the more they sinned against me; therefore I will change their glory into shame.

8 They feed on the sin of my people and set their heart on their iniquity.

9 And it shall be: like people, like priest. And I will punish them both for their ways and repay them for their deeds.

10 For they shall eat and not have enough; they shall commit whoredom but not produce increase because they deserted the LORD for their whoredom.

11 Whoredom to old wine and new, taking away the heart.

12 My people ask counsel at their wooden idols, and their wooden staff answers them. For the spirit of whoredom has caused them to stray, and they have gone whoring from subjection to their God.

13 They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and they burn incense upon the hills and under oaks, poplars, and elms because their shade is good. Therefore your daughters commit whoredom, and your brides commit adultery.

14 I will not punish your daughters, when they commit whoredom, nor your brides, when they commit adultery, for men themselves go apart with whores, and they sacrifice with shrine harlots. Therefore the people without understanding will fall.

15 Though you, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Judah become guilty; do not come to Gilgal nor go up to Bethaven. And do not swear, 'As the LORD lives.'

16 For Israel is stubborn like a stubborn heifer. How then will the LORD feed them like a lamb in a large pasture?

17 Ephraim is joined to idols; leave him alone!

18 Even when their drink is gone, they continue their whoredom continually; their rulers love shamefulness.

19 The wind has bound her up in its wings, and they shall be put to shame because of their sacrifices.

Hosea 5

1 "Hear this, O priests! And listen, O house of Israel! And give you ear, O house of the king! For this judgment is against you, because you have been a snare at Mizpah and a net spread upon Tabor.

2 The revolters are deep in slaughter, though I am a rebuke to them all.

3 I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from me; for now, O Ephraim, you have committed whoredom; and Israel is defiled.

4 Their deeds do not permit them to return to their God, for the spirit of whoredoms is within them and they do not know the LORD.

5 The pride of Israel testifies to his face. Therefore Israel and Ephraim shall fall in their iniquity; Judah shall also fall with them.

6 They shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the LORD, but they shall not find him; he has withdrawn himself from them.

7 They have dealt treacherously against the LORD, for they have begotten strange children. Now they shall be devoured in one month, along with their land.

8 Blow the horn in Gibeah and the trumpet in Ramah. Cry aloud at Bethaven: 'look behind you, O Benjamin.'

9 Ephraim shall be a desolation in the day of rebuke. I have made known among the tribes of Israel that which shall surely happen.

10 The princes of Judah are like those who remove boundary markers [showing the boundary between right and wrong]. Therefore I will pour out my wrath upon them like water.

11 Ephraim is oppressed and broken by judgment, because he willingly walked after the commandments of men.

12 Therefore I will be like a moth to Ephraim and like rottenness to the house of Judah.

13 When Ephraim saw his sickness and Judah saw his wound, then Ephraim went to the Assyrian and sent to king Jareb for help. Yet he could not heal you nor cure you of your wound.

14 For I will be to Ephraim like a lion, and like a young lion to the house of Judah. I, even I, will tear and continue tearing; I will carry them away and no one shall rescue them.

15 I will return to my place until they acknowledge their offence and seek my face; in their affliction they will earnestly seek me early."

Hosea 6

1 "Come, and let us return to the LORD, for he has torn, and he will heal us; he has wounded, and he will bind us up.

2 After two days he will revive us; in the third day he will raise us up so that we may live in his sight.

3  Let us know Him, let us press on to know the LORD. His going forth is as certain as the morning, and he will come to us like the rain, like the latter and former rain to the earth.

4 O Ephraim, what shall I do with you? O Judah, what shall I do with you? For your love is like the morning mist or the early dew that goes away.

5 Therefore I have cut them in pieces by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of my mouth; my judgments are like the light that goes forth.

6 For I desire mercy and not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.

7 But they like men [and Adam] have transgressed the covenant; there they have dealt treacherously against me.

8 Gilead is a city of those who work iniquity, and is defiled with footprints of blood.

9 And as troops of robbers wait for a man, so the company of priests murder on the way to Shechem [a city of refuge]; surely they commit lewdness.

10 I have seen a horrible thing in the house of Israel. There is whoredom in Ephraim; Israel is defiled.

11 Also, O Judah, there is a harvest appointed for you, when I return the captivity of my people.

Hosea 7

1 "When I would have healed Israel, the iniquity of Ephraim and the wickedness of Samaria was exposed; how they practice falsehood, and the thief breaks in and a troop of robbers spoil outside.

2 They do not consider in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness. Now their own deeds have assailed them on all sides; they are before my face.

3 They delight the king with their wickedness, and the princes with their lies.

4 They are all adulterers; burning like an oven heated by a baker who ceases from stirring the fire after he has kneaded the dough until it is leavened.

5 On the day of our king the princes have made him sick with bottles of wine; and he stretched out his hand with scoffers.

6 For they have made their heart like an oven, while they lie in wait. Their anger sleeps all the night; in the morning it burns like a flaming fire.

7 They are all hot like an oven and have devoured their judges; all their kings have fallen; there is none among them who call to me.

8 Ephraim has mixed himself among the nations; Ephraim is a cake not turned over.

9 Strangers have devoured his strength, and he does not know; yes, gray hairs are sprinkled on him, yet he does not know it.

10 And the pride of Israel testifies against him to his face. And they do not return to the LORD their God nor seek him in spite of all this.

11 Ephraim is like a silly dove without heart or sense; they call to Egypt; they go to Assyria.

12 When they go, I will spread my net over them; I will bring them down like the birds of the heavens. I will chastise them according to what their congregation has heard.

13 Woe to them, for they have fled from me! Destruction to them, because they have transgressed against me! Though I would redeem them, yet they have spoken lies against me.

14 And they have not cried to me with their heart, but they wail upon their beds; they assemble themselves for grain and wine, and they rebel against me.

15 Though I have bound and strengthened their arms, yet they imagine mischief against me.

16 They return, but not to the most High. They are like a deceitful bow; their princes shall fall by the sword for the insolence and rage of their tongue. This shall be their derision in the land of Egypt."
